6 of My Favourite Calgary Parks for Fall Family Photos

Whether you’re booking a professional photographer or setting up your phone for a family photo, Calgary has some beautiful places to capture the season.
Over the years, I’ve photographed families at parks all around the city, and these six are favourite Calgary parks for fall family photos. Each offers something a little different, from wooded pathways and golden leaves to water views and the downtown skyline.
1. Fish Creek Provincial Park
My pick for: wooded pathways and varied backdrops.
Fish Creek has so many beautiful areas to explore, but one of my favourite meeting spots for family sessions has been near the visitor centre.
I love the nearby tree-lined pathway, where the canopy of branches creates a lovely setting for portraits. The red barn has also been a favourite backdrop for my photos here.
With wooded areas and open spaces to choose from, I can capture several different looks without making the whole session feel like one long pose in the same spot.
2. Nose Hill Park
My pick for: open landscapes and a more natural, relaxed feel.
If you love rolling hills, open skies, and grassy landscapes, Nose Hill is a beautiful choice.
I usually park at the entrance near Shaganappi Trail and Edgemont Boulevard. I like the contrast between the open areas and the wooded spots farther down the hill. It gives families a choice between sweeping scenery and a more tucked-away setting.
The park has designated off-leash areas, so keep that in mind if anyone in your family is uncomfortable around dogs. Wear shoes you can walk in comfortably, too!
3. Baker Park
My pick for: landscaped surroundings and architectural details.
Baker Park is one of my favourite places to photograph in spring, but it deserves a spot on the autumn list, too.
The landscaped grounds, pathways, and trees give it a different feel from Nose Hill's wilder scenery. I also love having structures to work with. The park’s archways and arbour can help frame a photograph and add variety to a session.
Its riverside setting offers another backdrop to explore. If you want a mixture of greenery, fall colour, and interesting details, this is a lovely option.
4. Carburn Park
My pick for: water views and warm evening light.
Carburn might be my favourite spot on this list!
I love photographing families by the pond, especially around golden hour. The way the light falls across the water and surrounding trees can make the whole setting feel magical.
Autumn foliage adds warmth and colour, while the water gives the photographs a peaceful feel. It’s a place I enjoy returning to with my camera.
5. Pearce Estate Park
My pick for: leafy surroundings and an autumn walk with photo stops.
One of the first things I notice at Pearce Estate Park is the beautiful mature trees. In autumn, the changing leaves and fallen foliage make a lovely setting for family photographs.
I like looking for little pockets of colour and texture along the paths. You don’t always need a sweeping view for a beautiful portrait. Sometimes a tree-lined background and a patch of fallen leaves are enough.
This is a lovely choice if you want to combine photography with time exploring outdoors.
6. Rotary Park
My pick for: a Calgary skyline backdrop.
If you’d love the downtown skyline in your family photographs, Rotary Park is worth a visit.
I love the combination of trees, autumn colour, and city views. Including the skyline gives the photographs a sense of place. A little piece of Calgary in your family memories.
It’s a different look from the woodland and pond settings elsewhere on this list, and a great option if the city itself is part of the story you want your photographs to tell.
Make an Afternoon of It
You don’t need a formal photo session to enjoy these parks. Take a family walk, bring your camera, or use your phone to capture a few moments along the way.
Look for interesting light, give everyone time to explore, and take some photographs between the posed ones. Those little moments can become favourites, too.
Fall colours and park conditions change, so check your chosen location before you head out.
